Music Video Director Kit

Treatment to delivery for music videos with a real point of view.

Who it's for

  • Directors pitching independent artists and labels
  • Creators who shoot for musician friends and want to charge properly
  • Editors handed performance footage with no structure
  • Artists directing their own visuals with a small crew

The concrete outcome

You can pitch a treatment a client believes, shoot coverage that cuts, and deliver a finished video plus vertical cutdowns on schedule.

A music video lives or dies on the treatment and the coverage. The Music Video Director Kit takes you from first listen to delivered masters: mapping the song, defining a visual thesis and motif system, directing an artist who is not an actor, planning wardrobe and location continuity, covering performance properly, deciding what is practical and what is AI, then cutting to sync, handing off VFX, grading, and delivering vertical cutdowns with a QC pass.

After working through it

What you'll be able to do

01

Build a treatment document with thesis, motifs, references and scope

02

Map a song into sections, beats and cut zones before the shoot

03

Design a motif system that repeats and escalates across the video

04

Direct performance and get usable energy from a non-actor

05

Plan wardrobe and location continuity across a multi-setup day

06

Decide practical vs AI shot by shot, with reasons

07

Cut to sync, hand off VFX cleanly, grade, cut down vertical, QC and deliver

Contents

Module breakdown

Every module is a working stage of the pipeline with its own documents, decisions and checks.

M01

Treatment Builder

The document that wins the job and controls the shoot.

  • Treatment structure: thesis, world, motifs, sequences, look, scope
  • Reference still boards that communicate without over-promising
  • Budget-honest scope language and deliverable definitions
  • Client-facing version vs internal production version
M02

Song & Beat Map

Know the track cold before you write a shot.

  • Sectioning the song: intro, verse, pre, chorus, bridge, outro
  • Beat grid with timecode markers and energy curve
  • Cut-zone marking — where edits are allowed and where they are not
  • Lyric-image mapping without literal illustration
M03

Visual Thesis & Motif System

One idea, repeated with variation.

  • Writing a one-sentence visual thesis and testing every shot against it
  • Motif library: object, gesture, color, transition, framing
  • Escalation plan across the runtime
  • Restraint rules — what you deliberately never show
M04

Artist Direction

Get performance out of someone who is not an actor.

  • Pre-shoot conversation script and comfort setting
  • Playback protocol, half-speed and double-speed takes
  • Direction language that produces energy instead of self-consciousness
  • Handling nerves, entourage and time pressure on the day
M05

Wardrobe, Location & Continuity

A multi-setup day that still cuts together.

  • Wardrobe matrix mapped to sequences and locations
  • Continuity photo protocol and log sheet
  • Location scout sheet with power, sound, light and permission notes
  • Turnaround plan that protects the schedule
M06

Performance Coverage

Cover it so the edit has options.

  • Coverage ladder: wide, mid, close, detail, movement pass
  • Full-song passes vs section passes and when to use each
  • Lighting setups per sequence with fast reset options
  • Camera movement vocabulary matched to song energy
M07

Practical vs AI Framework

Decide with reasons, not vibes.

  • Decision matrix: cost, risk, continuity load, fidelity need
  • Shots that should always be practical
  • Transformation candidates and their reference-frame requirements
  • Scene systems that mix both without a visible seam
M08

Edit, VFX Handoff, Color & Delivery

Finish and hand over cleanly.

  • Selects process, sync workflow, performance edit assembly
  • VFX handoff package: plates, references, notes, frame ranges
  • Grade plan and matching transformed shots to camera negative
  • Vertical cutdowns, QC checklist, master export ladder, delivery note

How to use it

Step-by-step path

Run it in this order the first time. After that, jump straight to the stage you're in.

  1. 01

Listen and build the beat map before writing anything visual.

  2. 02

Write the one-sentence visual thesis, then the motif list.

  3. 03

Assemble the treatment and lock scope with the artist.

  4. 04

Build coverage, wardrobe and location plans from the treatment.

  5. 05

Shoot the coverage ladder with continuity photos at every reset.

  6. 06

Sync, select, assemble to the beat map, then send the VFX handoff.

  7. 07

Grade, build vertical cutdowns, run QC, deliver.

  1. 01

    Concept

    Intent, reference language, constraint list.

  2. 02

    Pre-produce

Shot list, storyboard, props, locations, schedule.

  3. 03

    Shoot

Exposure, framing, movement, clean plates, coverage.

  4. 04

    Transform

Model-neutral AI passes driven by reference frames.

Sample module

M01 — Treatment Builder

The document that wins the job and controls the shoot.

Page excerpt

Write the visual thesis in one sentence before you write a single shot. If a shot cannot be justified against that sentence, it is decoration and it will be the first thing cut. The thesis also protects you in the client conversation: scope creep is easier to refuse when the treatment states what the video is about in eleven words.

Rule: never promise a shot in a treatment you have not worked out how to cover practically.

Questions

About this system

Does this work for unsigned artists?+

Yes. The scope language and coverage plans are designed for small crews and single-day shoots, with an honest budget conversation built into the treatment.

Is the VFX handoff tool-specific?+

No. It defines what an artist or model needs to receive — plates, frame ranges, references and notes — regardless of the tool used downstream.

Can I use it for a live performance video?+

The coverage, sync and edit modules apply directly. The AI transformation modules are optional.
